What Is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person’s weight and height. It was devised by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 19th century and remains one of the most widely used screening tools for categorizing body weight. The formula divides weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters (BMI = kg / m^2), producing a single number that health professionals use as a quick indicator of whether a person’s weight falls within a healthy range.
BMI is used by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and healthcare systems worldwide to identify potential weight-related health risks at the population level. A BMI under 18.5 is classified as underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 as normal weight, 25 to 29.9 as overweight, and 30 or above as obese. These thresholds correlate statistically with increased risks of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers.
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a convenient and cost-free screening tool, it has important limitations. It does not distinguish between lean muscle mass and body fat, meaning athletes and very muscular individuals may register as overweight or obese despite having low body fat. It also does not account for fat distribution — visceral fat (around the organs) is more dangerous than subcutaneous fat (under the skin), yet BMI cannot differentiate between the two. Additionally, BMI thresholds may not apply equally across all ethnic groups, as body composition and health risks vary among populations.
